"It is important that the G7 assumes and exercises a global leadership role in the development and use of Artificial Intelligence and that AI develops in a context of security, reliability, transparency and respect for the rights of all workers".
With these words, Italian Minister of Labour and Social Policies Marina Calderone opened the third G7 Labour Employment Working Group meeting chaired by Italy at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Training Centre. "This is a centre of excellence", stressed the minister, "supported by Italy that is hosting us on the 60th anniversary of the Centre's activities. The G7 is committed to defining the text of the AI Action Plan in the world of work, which we intend to bring to the attention of G7 leaders".
Other topics addressed included the consequences of an ageing population, the need to invest in human capital and skills, workplace health and safety, women’s empowerment, and the ‘Global Coalition for Social Justice’ promoted by the ILO. In this regard, Minister Calderone reminded us that today is the Day of Legality, "which coincides with the barbaric murder of Giovanni Falcone", she said. "Respecting legality also means safeguarding the rights and dignity of workers against all forms of abuse and criminality".
