Volunteers are persons who, of their own volition, carry out activities for the benefit of the community and the common good, including through a third sector organisation, making their time and skills available personally, of their own free will and without payment, on a non-profit basis (not even indirect profits), purely for the purposes of solidarity. Third sector organisations can make use of volunteers in the activities they carry out and are required to register regular volunteers in a special register. In Italy, as in Europe, volunteering must meet three requirements: it must be performed personally, voluntarily and free of charge. It takes place in a wide variety of fields.
