Special rules on health and safety at work that apply when hiring young workers

Given that it is prohibited to use young persons for various operations, processes or jobs (set out in Annex I of the aforementioned Law No 977), except in certain exceptions, before using children for work and upon any significant change in working conditions, the employer must carry out a risk assessment with particular regard to: 

  • incomplete development, lack of experience and awareness of existing or potential occupational risks in relation to age; 
  • equipment and arrangement of the workplace and workstation; 
  • nature, degree and duration of exposure to chemical, biological and physical agents; 
  • manual handling of loads; 
  • arrangement, selection, use and handling of work equipment, specifically agents, machines, devices and instruments; 
  • planning of work processes and work performance and their interaction with the general work organisation; 
  • situation regarding the training and informing of children. 

Workers’ information is also provided to those who hold parental responsibility for the children.
