Employment contracts

In Italy, you can be employed under different types of employment contracts, provided for in Legislative Decree No 81 of 15 June 2015:

  • an indefinite contract has no expiry date and is the general form of employment relationship;
  • a term contract generally has an expiry date of no more than 12 months; it may exceed this limit (however remaining within 24 months) only when the employer has at least one of the following needs:
    • temporary and objective needs, unrelated to ordinary business;
    • replacement needs of other workers;
    • requirements related to significant and non-programmable temporary increases in ordinary business;
  • an agency contract (which may be for an indefinite period or for a fixed term) is concluded between an authorised agency, a worker (agency) and a user, where the agency worker carries out his/her work. You can consult the Register of Authorised Agencies;
  • an intermittent contract is a contract, including a fixed-term contract, whereby a worker places himself/herself at the disposal of an employer who may use his/her work in a discontinuous manner over the week, month or year;
  • An apprenticeship contract is an employment contract of indefinite period whose purpose is to train young people. It can be of three types:
    1. apprenticeship for vocational qualification and diploma, upper secondary education diploma and higher technical specialisation certificate;
    2. vocational apprenticeship;
    3. high education and research apprenticeships.

Different minimum and maximum age limits are laid down for each of them.
